The RSRN project, supported by the Heritage Fund, is working with eight conservation partners and a network of  50 volunteer Red Squirrel Groups to increase red squirrel numbers and improve protection for this iconic species across northern England and southern Scotland.

Golden Eagle Recovery in Northern England

Having helped restore Golden Eagles to record numbers in south Scotland, RUN is delighted to welcome a £1million boost from the UK Government and Forestry England.  This will support vital work around the revival of the Golden Eagle population in northern England.

As we are already seeing a Golden Eagles cross the ‘border’ from south Scotland, this new venture will explore a reintroduction programme with the potential for juvenile Golden Eagles being released.  First, though, we want to hold conversations with a wide range of communities and organisations to explore prospects for a range of activities.

Working with Golden Eagles in Southern Scotland

We are thrilled to see the Golden Eagle population now restored to so many parts of southern Scotland.  The reports from local people, visitors and land managers – to mention just some of the interests – are telling us a story of revival.

We need to continue monitoring the population closely. The information we glean from the settlement and movements of satellite tagged birds is vital in helping us build a picture of which areas, habitats and management measures are working well for the birds.

Golden Eagles and many other wild animals face formidable challenges in the face of a squeeze on space from development and intensive uses.  We want to ensure that the best evidence base is available to inform land use decisions as our work progresses.

We face a nature and climate crisis.  Golden Eagles are brilliant barometers – shining a light on what works well, and warning us of dangers ahead.  Having revived the population, and propelled by the excitement and support of local and visiting people, we are unstinting in our efforts to secure the very best for nature and people in south Scotland.
