RUN Squirrel Team at Drumlanrig

Last weekend, Restoring Upland Nature attended the Galloway Country Fair at Drumlanrig, representing both the charity and our partnership with the Red Squirrel Recovery Network. The fair offered a brilliant opportunity to meet people from across Dumfries & Galloway who are passionate about wildlife and eager to play a part in protecting Scotland’s native red squirrels.

Throughout the weekend, we spoke with families, local residents, land managers and visitors who wanted to learn more about red squirrel conservation, the threats they face, and the practical steps communities can take to support them. Our stand was busy from start to finish — helped enormously by the arrival of Sandy the squirrel, our giant red squirrel mascot. Kids were thrilled to meet Sandy, and their excitement led to conversations with parents about how they can get involved.

Being at the Galloway Country Fair gave us a fantastic platform to raise awareness, share resources, and connect with new supporters. We left feeling encouraged and grateful for the enthusiasm shown by everyone who stopped by. Protecting red squirrels is a team effort, and it was inspiring to see just how many people want to get involved.
